Change your PERSPECTIVE

Two people are talking to each other in front of a number.

I was listening to a podcast and they were talking about the late Charlie Munger and dissecting some of his quotes. The one that captured my attention was when Charlie was asked at a cocktail party if he could play the piano? His answer, “I don’t know, I’ve never tried. I probably could become a great piano player if I try.”

To be honest, if I was asked this question, my immediate response would have been, no. His answer really made me think about how I look at my goals.

The Oxford dictionary defines perspective as a particular attitude toward something; a way of thinking about something. I’ve always pledged to save more money but never thought about living like a saver.

Here are some “new perspective” examples:

  • Goal to lose weight? New perspective: eat like a healthy person
  • Goal to exercise more? New perspective: create an environment so you move like an active person
  • Goal to travel more? New perspective: become a curious person about locations and cultures

Sounds simple but it does require some thought, planning and ultimately action. Let’s take “create an environment that nudges you to move”. How can we do this? Most of us sit at our computers for 8 to 10 hours a day and working out is the last thing we want to do at the end of the day but making some small adjustments will move you in the right direction.

  • Every hour, stand up at your desk and stretch
  • If you work remotely, take a meeting at the park
  • Instead of driving to the grocery store, ride your bike
  • Go for a walk after dinner, even if it’s cold (that’s why you bought a coat)

This new perspective can have a significant impact on your lifestyle!
